Well, Halloween passed with a trick and treat, and Bonfire Night went with a bang – well, lots of them over a fortnight really – and now here is another exciting happening – an extra Newsletter! Don’t get too excited though – it’s just that several noteworthy items have popped up from the ocean depths that warrant an extra screed.

Firstly, this from Maureen Dealey of the Jubilee Sailing Trust with an interesting offer:

l am writing to you on behalf of a charity called The Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST) (www.jst.org.uk, a UK-based organisation that owns and operates the only two tall ships in the world that were designed and built to enable all physical abilities to go sailing.
Both of our ships, Tenacious and Lord Nelson, sail all around the world, and on board our magnificent, fully accessible tall ships, everybody gets the chance to participate in all aspects of running the ship - from setting the sails and helming the ship to climbing aloft and taking a watch. Since the charity’s inception 35 years ago our philosophy has been that life should be about equality, sharing and celebrating our individual differences and working together to achieve greater things.
Currently, Lord Nelson – who has just arrived home after her epic Sail the World challenge (which saw her visit over 30 countries in 2 years) has just left the UK to embark on voyages in the Canary Islands, Cape Verdes and the Caribbean. Her sister ship, Tenacious, will soon be heading to Northern Spain before embarking on some brilliant Canary Island-hopping voyages, and some brand new river voyages along the Rio Guadalquivir in Seville.

We would be most grateful if you could promote our voyages to your yacht club members and request that you put these details in your newsletter.

We’re offering a 10% discount on all of our voyages to all yacht club members – all they need to do is quote code YC10 when booking

Hot on the heels of the Jubilee Trust followed this one from Maybe Sailing:

In 2015, our beautiful Tall Ship 'Maybe' will be spending March, April and May in the Firth of Clyde. Maybe is a traditional gaff rigged Dutch ketch built in 1929.  Based in Hull, Maybe spends the year providing Tall Ship Adventure voyages, Sail training, youth development, adult and family charters, and takes part in the Tall Ships Races. In late January, we will be making our way from Hull to Liverpool, via Inverness and the Caledonian Canal.  We are offering an overnight sail on the canal from Inverness to Fort Augustus and two day sails on Loch Ness.  This is a great opportunity to experience sailing on a traditional Tall Ship. During March, April and May we will be offering weekend day sails and overnight sails in the Firth of Clyde.

We are offering these sails at discounted to members of your sailing club and will offer a further discount for group bookings of 10 or more.  Also, if your sailing club wished to charter the boat (with 3 - 4 members of crew) we would offer a discount for this also.

The possibility basing a future Penguin cruise with Maybe Sailing will, I’m sure, be discussed at the AGM in January, but I wished to pass this information on in case any members wished to take up the individual offer.

I have also heard from Camilla Veale, who, with Cliff Davies, is taking part in the Oceans of Hope sailing project for sufferers of Multiple Sclerosis – do follow the website link for more detail. Camilla has been offered a leg from Fort Lauderdale through the Caribbean to the Panama Canal, finishing in Panama City on the 26th of January. Cliff is doing the leg from Panama to the Galapagos Islands – two weeks of blue water sailing! They plan to meet in Panama where Camilla hopes to get Cliff to stow her away for his leg…. I understand Cliff is very excited about the Blue Boobies in the Galapagos, but fear he may have misunderstood the nature of the sights on offer. Follow the link to www.sailing-sclerosis.com  where if anyone does wish to support the 'Oceans of Hope' project they can do so by clicking the 'donate' tab on the home page. I think this is a fantastic project that just goes to show the determination and courage of sufferers of this serious disease – it warrants our support.

On a lighter note, John Goode, who used to run Southern Sailing and the Sailing Today magazine has kindly offered discount tickets to club members for those who might wish to visit the London Boat Show at Excel:

Good afternoon Jonty
I trust you are keeping well. Below, and earlier than usual, are details of the discounted ticket offer for your members, their families and friends.
Meanwhile, if you would like to have the free use of a room at ExCel during the Show for a Penguin’s meeting please let me know soonest as National Boat Shows will, subject to availability & demand, do their best to accommodate you.
Kindest regards as ever – John

And finally – Phew!, I hear you say - don’t forget the Penguin high point of the year: The AGM and Ceilidh on 10th January, 2015. Jane Fanshawe has asked me to remind those members who intend to join us to let her know – it helps plan the catering numbers. I know she would also appreciate me giving those who have not set up Direct Debits or reviewed their Standing Orders a little nudge – she has worked very hard contacting you all and, whilst great progress has been made, there are still some members paying incorrect subs. By now you should all have received your Annual Mailing Pack either by snail mail or electronically– Jane has included a message to any still on her ‘target list’!

So, I hope to see you in 2015 – have a great Christmas, and don’t forget to leave a glass of sherry for him, and a carrot for Rudolph! Remember, it’s only five weeks away...

Best Wishes

Jonty
